Rocton 2008
Kings and Classics

Review

Not too many people knew exactly where Rockton Ontario was when it was announced as the location for the first annual "Kings and Classics" event for July 2008. We sure know where Rockton is now.

The organizers (Rock 'N' Ray Michaels of Oldies 1150 CKOC and his partner Maurice Corsi) hit a home run the first time out.

26 Elvis tribute artists took to the stage in the youth, pro and non pro divisions and were judged by 5 members of the King's Court.

It was interesting having both early years and Vegas years judged in the same categories.

Our choices were Anthony Carbone in the youth division, foregoing his glasses for contacts!

Non professional champion was James Gibb wearing the burgundy velvet shirt a la Tupelo 1956.

Professional winner was John Cigan who portrayed Elvis in his Vegas jumpsuit years.

One highlight for me was T.J. Jackson's rendition of "Little Darlin'" as Elvis did it in 1975, complete with the "hoopa hoopas" and the falsetto ending. I've never heard that done in a competition and it was great fun to hear.

It was also nice to have the guys all do one warm up song which they all seemed to have fun with. It loosened them up and also gave them a chance to try some songs we don't often hear. It was also fun to see all the ETA's up on stage for a "Viva Las Vegas" finale.

The atmosphere was fun and included the classic car show, vendors and a pie eating contest.

The event was so well received that it's already been announced there will be a Rockton 2009. So everyone set your GPS's and we'll see you again next year.
