Hallowe’en Dance And Show Saturday, October 27 th, London, Ontario

by Wendy King

Surveying the scene at the London Legion with black cats, zombies, various and assorted Elvii’s and a very creative pile of leaves that moved along with the help of a sweeper. It was easy to see magic was in the air.

It was the Hallowe’en dance and show starring London ’s own Rick Duin with his tributes to both Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. It also starred James Gibb of Harrowas “young” Elvis with all the energy that conjures up. The evening also featured Doug McKenzie doing his knock out portrayal of Roy Orbison and Dawn Peddie with her beautiful renditions of the songs of both Patsy Cline and Wynonna Judd. This was turning into more of a party than a show.

Rick Duin started off as the “man in black” with a great long black suit coat with white ruffled shirt, and going through all the great hits from “Walk the Line” to “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” to the fun songs like “A Boy Named Sue” and “One Piece at a Time.” He even got the crowd singing along to “Will The Circle Be Unbroken”. So much fun!

James Gibb came out as a 50’s dynamo running through all the great Elvis’ classics like “Hound Dog”, “Don’t Be Cruel”.

“Shake, Rattle and Roll” and then doing a great job on the beautiful ballads like “As Long as I Have You”, “Don’t” and “ Loving You”.

Rick returned to do a Vegas Elvis set, including “Way Down”, “ Polk Salad Annie”, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Walk a Mile in My Shoes”.

I have a couple of observations: I really enjoyed seeing the guys do a whole show as opposed to how I usually see them, at competition doing just one or two songs at a time. It was wonderful to see these performers showing so much range of performance.

Loved the strobe light effects which made you really able to “pretend” you were seeing Elvis go through his fabulous moves.

Kudos to Cheryl Duin for the great job on lighting and sound and to Lisa Gibb who did a super job on decorations.

I, also have to mention the two pumpkins that adorned the stage. One carved with Johnny Cash’s likeness and one with Elvis’. Those were done by James Gibb and they were masterpieces.

The whole show was just a huge treat. Another really nice thing was seeing so many helping out with the clean up of the legion afterward and the legion staff saying “No one ever helps us clean up”. That’s just one more thing that makes Elvis fans so special.

The upcoming appearances for both Rick and James can be found on the Kings Court website under “events”.
