The very best Elvis judges anywhere As reported in The Mississauga News - November 26, 2006 Chris Clay Two years after California Dreaming's successful run at Stage West Theatre, the show's writers have again found inspiration in the sunny climes of the American west coast to help drive away the winter blahs. Stage West executive producer Howard Pechet teamed up with Nevin Grant to pen the original show, which debuted in 2004. They're back together and, with a little help from Timothy French and Bob Foster, came up with California Dreaming 2: The Beat Goes On. French also directs and choreographs the production and Anthony Bastianon adds his touch as musical director. The show opened at Stage West last Thursday and continues until Feb. 18. The production is a musical revue, featuring actors in full costume singing popular hit songs. While some of the music stretches back to the 1960s, there are also songs by contemporary artists such as Sheryl Crow (Soak Up The Sun) and Bonnie Raitt (Something To Talk About).
The evening begins with tunes by Sonny and Cher (The Beat Goes On), The Turtles (Happy Together), The Carpenters (We've Only Just Begun), Linda Ronstadt (It's So Easy) before three of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits (Go Your Own Way, Dreams and Don't Stop). The music then takes on a country flavour, with renditions of Glen Campbell and Kenny Rogers tunes followed by CCR (Born on the Bayou, Bad Moon Rising and Down on the Corner) before popular songs by Earth, Wind and Fire close out the first act. When the curtain rises after intermission, the music gets whimsical, with Jefferson Airplane (Somebody To Love), Journey (Who's Cryin' Now, Don't Stop Believin' and Separate Ways), Heart (Magic Man, Crazy On You and Dreamboat Annie), Halls and Oates (Maneater), Michael Jackson, Huey Lewis and the News as well as Santana.
